The BEST Squarespace Feature Update Yet! How To Save and Copy Sections!
Sometimes there are updates to your website platform that make you so freaking happy you want to scream it from the rooftops!
This recent update to the Squarespace editor is something I’ve wished for and it’s a favorite of mine and I think you're going to love it too.
🥁 Drumroll please…. (oh right, the title of this post gave it away, oh well, not gonna let that dull my excitement!)
It’s now possible to save and copy(Reuse) sections!
I’ll walk you through the process of how to do this below, but if you prefer watching a detailed demonstration, be sure to view the companion video on my YouTube channel.
All About Saving Sections in Squarespace
If you're new to Squarespace, you're probably thinking:
Yeah…so, what's the big deal?
So let's go back a little bit to see how far we’ve come.
Until now, when you created a page in Squarespace and you created sections within that page, you could do just about anything design-wise that you wanted. But what if you had a section that you loved and wanted to reuse on another page in your website?
Before this update, you couldn't just copy that section and paste it into the new page to reuse it.
You had to recreate that section from scratch!
Kind of a pain, right? But now you can save that section into a library to reuse later. And when you go to the new page where you want to reuse that saved section, you can add it with a couple of clicks.
No, really. I’m serious. A couple of clicks.
Fun fact: Once you’ve saved a section, it stays in the library until you delete it! So even if you decide to remove that section from a page it’s not gone forever!
Here’s are some use cases:
Highlighting a specific piece of content in multiple places (e.g lead magnets, testimonials, galleries)
Re-using a favorite section layout or design.
Sharing content in a section on a page temporarily
Save it, remove it when it’s not needed, then add it back from the library when you want to share it again.
I won’t leave you hanging there, though. How about…
A real-world example of this Feature in action!
Recently, I took advantage of this while re-designing a client’s site.
There were several sections across her website where she highlighted client testimonials, but they were all created and styled differently.
As part of the redesign, we wanted a consistent look across the website for the testimonials.
I created a section with a list block on her homepage for those testimonials and styled it to her specifications for that page (colors, block style, scrolling, etc.)
Once I had the master design of the section created, I saved it and then added it on the other pages. From there, all I had to do was make any tweaks to the content, or color theme for that page.
Now, when she wants to update her testimonials, she only needs to update the content in the list on the page and not worry about the design.
It was a huge time-saver and we all know “time is money” 💰!
Whether you're a professional like me, or a DIY-er this functionality makes design so much faster and easier.
It's a fabulous update.
But, enough of my gushing over it! Let me show you how to do it!
How To Save and Reuse a Section
Below is the basic step-by-step process, but if you want a detailed demonstration with examples be sure to check out the YouTube video.
Step 1. While in ‘Edit’ mode, select the section you want to save/copy.
Step 2. Click “Edit Section” and look for the heart ♥️ (next to the duplicate option).
Step 3. Click on the heart ♥️ to save the section. (A small pop-up will show up at the bottom of your screen confirming that it was saved.)
Step 4. Navigate to the page where you want to re-use the section and select “Add Section”.
Step 5. In the window that opens, select “Saved Sections” and then click the one that you want to use and it will be added to your page.
Step 6. Edit the section on your page as needed.
And that’s all there is to it!
