How To Guide: Adding and Editing Links in Squarespace 7.1

Disclosure: Some links in this post are affiliate links. If you click through and pay for a product or service, I may recieve as small compensation at no cost to you.

If you've had experience thus far in Squarespace with adding hyperlinks to images or just within text, you may have found that it's quite a multi-step process. It's not difficult, but just a few extra steps than you really need. And if you don't remember to hit ‘Apply,’ all your work just goes out the window when you close the little link box!🤦

In this post, I'm sharing the current (or the old way, depending on when you're reading this) method of adding and editing links in Squarespace 7.1. But I'm also going to show you the new and improved method!

In January 2024, Squarespace updated the editor interface for adding, editing, and dealing with links in your Squarespace website, and it's a huge improvement!

I’ll walk you through the process of how to do this below, but if you prefer watching a tutorial, be sure to view the companion video on my YouTube channel.

The “Classic” Links Editor

First, let's start with the standard or ‘classic’ way of adding a link in Squarespace.

If you're working in a text block and you want to add a link, follow these steps:

1. Highlight the text you want to apply the link to.

2. Click on the "link" 🔗 option in the formatting toolbar to open the link editor.

3. In the link editor, you can select a page from your website using the backslash option, or you can directly type a URL if you want an external link. You can also click on the settings wheel to open the menu that lists all the options you can link to.

4. If you're linking to an external website, it's best practice for SEO to select the option to open the link in a new window.

5. Hit "Save" and then remember to click "Apply" for the link to take effect.

6. If you don’t hit “Apply” and close the box, your work will be lost, and you’ll need to start over!

To edit or remove a link, simply highlight the linked text, click on the link option, and make the necessary changes. You can also remove the link altogether.

If you need to add a link to an image block, follow the above steps in the image settings.

The “New” Links Editor

Now, let's review the new and streamlined way of adding links in Squarespace 7.1. The process is quite similar but with a simplified interface.

Here's how it works:

1. Highlight the text you want to link.

2. Click on the "link"🔗 option.

3. From the dropdown menu, choose whether it's an external URL, a file, an email, or a phone number.

4. If you want to link to an internal page, fear not! It’s still there! You can type the forward slash option to choose from your website's pages.

5. By default, the new version opens external links in a new tab, which is a great feature for better SEO.

6. Simply hit "Enter," and the link is added. No need to hit apply!

To edit or remove a link using the new editor, hover over the linked text, and the full URL will be displayed. From there, you can edit or remove the link as needed.

You can also copy the link, which is great if you need to use that link in multiple sections or pages of your site. Such a time saver!

In an image block, in the settings of the image, you’ll now see a box that says “Attach Link.” Clicking on that will open the editor, and the process is the same from there!

Summary

As you can see, managing links in Squarespace 7.1 has always been fairly straightforward, but the new and improved links editor interface is a big improvement! Fewer clicks, less chance of accidentally not saving your work, and easier editing and copying make for a simplified user experience.
